Morning tours: cooler and quieter

The palm groves are at their quietest before the larger group tours arrive, and in summer the temperature difference between 9am and 2pm is the difference between a good ride and an endurance test.

Morning suits families with young children, anyone visiting between June and September, and anyone with sightseeing booked for the afternoon.

Sunset tours: the most requested slot

Sunset is what most people ask for, and in spring and autumn it is the better call. The light goes soft and warm across the palms, the heat drops off, and photographs taken then are the ones people actually keep.

The trade-off is that it is the busiest slot, so it books out first. If you want a specific evening, ask early.

Which season is best

Spring is the easiest. Temperatures are comfortable through the day and the groves are at their greenest, which is why March to May is the busiest stretch of the year.

Summer is hot enough that midday is not worth booking, but early morning and sunset both work, and the palm shade helps more than people expect. Autumn brings the warmth back with cooler evenings. Winter days are often sunny; mornings can be genuinely cold, so afternoons tend to be the better booking.

What to wear

Practical beats smart. The tracks are dusty and everything picks it up.

• Closed shoes, not sandals.
• Long trousers for quad biking. Loose, flapping clothing is worth avoiding on a quad.
• Sunglasses and sunscreen, whatever the season.
• A hat for daytime departures.
• A light jacket for winter mornings and winter evenings.

How long to set aside

From hotel pickup to being dropped back, plan on roughly 1.5 to 3.5 hours depending on what you book. The Palmeraie is only 10 to 15 minutes from the Medina and Gueliz, so most of that time is the activity itself.

The quad tour is two hours on site, the camel trek two, the pony ride one. Combos run about three hours. Add the briefing, the photo stops and the drive at each end.
